We had our third Redwall Day recently. Unfortunately, a few families had sick children
so numbers were down but it always a lot of fun regardless.
If you wan the full wrap up, Donna has written it up on her blog
but as homeschoolblogger is about to close, I have copied it below.
The boys came as the following characters:
Stephen as Basil Stag Hare (somehow I think these ears are going to get a work-out)
Zachary as Stonefleck
Adam wanted to be Orlando the Axe(mainly because of the weapons he carries)
but we all thought he should be Cheek. "Cheek by name, cheek by nature." It just suits him!
This time, we made a Vegetable & Lentil soup. There were other berry-type yummies there too.
I also made a Strawberry Fizz/cordial by putting some canned strawberries in a blender,
whizzing them up and adding lemonade to it.
I have a few more feast options planned for the next day, which is on Mariel of Redwall.
I’ve been looking at some recipe books plus been reading some mouth-watering passages
in the book itself.
Hopefully, it will keep a hungry horde satisfied!
Thanks again for organising the day, Luptons!

Today was our third Redwall Readers Activity Day. The book this month was Mattimeo.
This month we were down a bit on the numbers, a few out sick, but next month I have been
warned the numbers will SWELL with adding in 4 new families to participate!!

Today was our third Redwall Readers Activity Day. The book this month was Mattimeo.
This month we were down a bit on the numbers, a few out sick, but next month I have been
warned the numbers will SWELL with adding in 4 new families to participate!!
Today’s schedule was:
10:30 kids arrive, Introductions & Captive Escape.
This is one of my favorite parts of the day. The kids always arrive so excited and it is great hearing them say which character they are and why they chose that one… A lot of boys chose theirs yesterday based on the weapons the character gets to have and the foods they like to eat. Classic boy logic for ya =0)
After the introductions we played a game of Captive Escape, since the captives escape in the book. We played this one with all the kids in one room, I would choose a slaver and he would leave the room going into my bedroom, once the slaver was “asleep” I would choose one kiddo to escape into the kitchen. All the other slaves’ would switch places. On the count of three we would all yell “escape escape”, which would bring the slaver running back in. They then had 15 seconds to say who the missing slave was. We would call the escapee back in to see if he was right and another slaver was chosen.
11:00 War, Jess Squirrel Wants a Tree, & Captive March
We headed out back and divided into two teams for a round of War, which is a game of dodge ball. We have played war each month and it is a good game to get the kids outside and all participating.
Our back yard goes onto a golf course so we have a bit of extra room out back, which is where the dodge ball game was played. There is also this grove of trees in a triangle… where we headed next. It worked out wonderfully that we had exactly one less tree then kiddo playing the game. I was making this one up as we went along but it was a fun game and the kids liked it. SO everyone went to a tree with one kid left over. That kid was in the center and would say, “Poor Jess wants a tree” which was the cue for everyone to scramble to a different tree, and the one without a tree would become Jess. (This is a lot like Poor Kitty wants a Corner if you are a Laura Ingalls Wilder Fan) The trick to the game was – since it was a larger area you could only go to each tree once. Making them have to jam all around the area, getting in some good short spurts of running and a lot of laughing.
Captive March was up next. The captives were ironed together, well at least they held onto the jump rope, and forced to march in row wherever their slavers led them. It was a merry little march around & through trees, in circles, through a cut thru to the golf course and back to the house.
11:30 Trivia Game was played in the kitchen area. We had made up some poster boards with types of animals listed on six, we had mice, moles, birds, stoats, weasels, & shrews. I had printed and cut apart a lot of names from the book and placed those in a bowl. Each kiddo pulled out three names and taped them upside down on the poster board they thought it would go on. We taped them upside down so none was blamed for getting them wrong which made it a collective Redwall trivia game. The group got about 68% correct which on our chart landed them just between a Mossflower Sticky Beak and a Brother/Sister. They were all thrilled that they had passed the first two ranks of Dibbins and Novices. They will be aspiring to achieve the even higher Abbot/ Abbess or the highest rank of Redwall Recorder in oncoming months.
12:00 saw a stampede to hand washing and a line of kiddos carrying foods outside to the Redwall Feast, everyone’s favorite part of the day. Brian Jacques does such a fabulous job of making our mouths drool with his rich descriptions of the foods and feasts that we do our bit to make it happen for the kids. Today’s menu was: Ambrose Spike’s Cheddar & Pepper Scones, Feather Light Biscuits, Forest Logs, Mice Nibbles, Meadow Cream, Raspberry & Apple Cordial, Strawberry Fizz, Shrew Cakes, Vegetable & Lentil Soup, Apple Berry Bites, Autumn Soup, Cool Spring Water, Rollo’s Mince Pies, Summer Salad, Berry Tarts & Blueberry & Blackberry muffins.
12:30 was the obstacle course. In Mattimeo there was a quest with many obstacles… so we had to have our bit as well.
They started off crossing the river on a raft…
(Using a stick push themselves across the street and back on a 4 wheel trolley)
Next they had to climb the cliffs and land safely…
A trip through the forest where the painted ones were in hiding …
(go thought he back yard where moms with water balloons we waiting)
And then a jump off the gorge and a sprint up to Lord of Mossflower
(A tree on our deck)
1:30 Farewell. We kicked everyone out so we could have thirty minutes turn around before our next activity. We hope everyone enjoyed the day and I know of some that are all ready a few chapters into our next book, Mariel of Redwall. And one cheeky little one who was eyeing my rope belt for her gull whacker. (;0))
Till next time…. REEDDDDWALLLLLLLLLL
